Wi-Fi 5 vs Wi-Fi 6: which one do you actually need?

June 22, 2025 1 min read

Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) is the successor to Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac), bringing improvements in speed, capacity, and efficiency. But do you actually need it?

Key Differences

Wi-Fi 6 introduces OFDMA (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access), which allows your router to communicate with multiple devices simultaneously instead of sequentially. This dramatically improves performance in homes with many connected devices.

When to Upgrade

If you have 20+ devices, do 4K streaming, or gaming, Wi-Fi 6 makes a real difference. For smaller homes with basic usage, Wi-Fi 5 is still perfectly capable.
